Let the tension in string is T and acceleration of masses is a. Then
3g -T = 3a
T-1g = 1a
So a = ½g =5
acceleration on 3kg will be downwards while on 1kg will be upward in direction.
So acceration of COM
= [3*5 +1*(-5)]/(3+1) = 10/4 = 2.5 = 0.5*x
So x = 5.
