Acceleration due to gravity (g) on  the surface of the earth is given by the formula :
g = GM/R2  .......(1)
where, G is Universal Gravitational Constant = 6.67 X 10-11 Nm2kg-2
M is the mass of the earth = 6.018 X 1024 kg
R is the radius of the earth = 6.4 X 106 m
Substituting values of G, M and R in eq. 1, we get the value of acceleration due to gravity (g) on the earth's surface = 9.8 m/s2.
The acceleration due to gravity is the acceleration set up in the body when it falls freely under the effect of gravity alone. It is independent of the mass, shape and size of the body but depends upon the mass and radius of the earth.
