The initial velocity and final velocity of the ball are in opposite directions. Hence, considering the final velocity to be positive, the initial velocity is taken to be negative (as it is exactly opposite in direction to the final velocity). Note that velocity is a vector quantity that has both direction and magnitude. In this case, the direction is indicated by the sign(+ve or –ve).
