In projectile motion when air resistance is negligible, is it ever necessary to consider three-dimensional motion rather than two-dimensional?

It is not necessary to consider the three dimension projection motion when the air resistance is negligible. This is because in absence of air-resistance, the object will move in a two dimensional plane, such that one of the axis would account for the horizontal displacement and the other axis would account for the vertical displacement of object.
