There will be two forces acting on the ball, mg and the pseudo force.
So the relative acceleration of the ball ( that is acc. Of ball wrt the lift ) will be ''g+a (a is acc. of lift)".
So time taken by the ball to come back to the man will be : time of flight = 2u/relative acc. As rel. acc.=g+a , we get 
      Time of flight = 2×12/12 = 2sec.
