For a body following translational motion the kinetic energy is defined as ½ mv.We can extend this definition to riid body dynamics also.
Therefore K.E=½ mv2
                      =½ *(I/r2)*(wr)2                                                    [since I=mr2 and v=wr]
                      =½ Iw2
We can also prove it by integrating the work done by each particle

K.E=∫mv.dv
      =m∫(wr)d(wr)
      =mw2r2/2
      =Iw2/2
