First and most important point to be noted in the problems of constraint motion is that velocity of every object is considered along the string .So the assumption that the component of velocity of string in the direction of object of mass ‘M’ is wrong.So your first approach is not coorrect .
While your second method of solving the problem is correct in which the velocity of mass ‘M’ along the either section of the string is assumed thus got the correct result of and the relation becomes v=u/cos(theta).
