The cross-sectional areas of the various blood vessels present in the human body are not the same. From the equation of continuity, the mass flux of the blood flowing through these blood vessels should remain constant. So, the speed of the flow of the blood in small blood vessels like the capillaries have higher speed while those having large cross-sectional area have lower speed. According to Bernoulli’s equation, the pressure of the fluid flow increases as the speed of the blood flow decreases and the converse. Thus, the pressure is lower in the blood vessels which have large cross-sectional area. In small blood vessels, the pressure of the blood flow is higher. Therefore, there are variations of pressure in the blood as it circulates through our body.
