The flow of blood exerts pressure on the walls of the blood vessels. It is due to the pumping action of the heart. Such pressure is allowed to exert force on the apparatus used for measuring pressure. In such apparatus, there is a mercury column installed in it. The pressure exerts by the blood changes the height of the mercury column. The corresponding height of the mercury column gives the pressure of the blood. Thus, physician measure our blood pressure.
