Dear student,

The job of friction is to initiate pure rolling by bringing the velocity of the point of contact of rolling body with the ground to zero. Intially when the body has either the translational or rotational component of velocity more at the point of contact with the ground, friction acts to increase one and decrease the other so that they are equal. After that moment, friction stops acting and body starts rolling purely.
