Comment on these statements: In a car collision, the force the car exerts on being stopped can be determined either from its momentum or its kinetic energy. In one case the time of stopping And in the other the distance of stopping also need to be known.

It is very hard to stop if the body has some momentum. We have to apply some force against its motion for some period. In a car collision, the force the car exerts on being stopped can be determined from its rate of change of momentum. When the car collides with an object, the object applies some force against its motion for some time. Then its momentum will be changed. As we know from Newton’s second law, the rate of change of momentum will give the applied force, therefore we can measure the force which being to stop the car from its rate of change of momentum. Therefore knowing the time of stopping, we can determine the rate of change of momentum which results the amount force which the car exerts on being stopped.
