Dear student,
The significant figures of a number are actually those digits which carry a meaningful contributing towards its precision. This would include all digits except:

a) All leading zeros;
b) The zeroes which trail and thus they are merely placeholders to indicate the scale of the number; and
c) Spurious digits which are introduced by calculations which have been carried out to a greater precision than that of the original data.
