The separation becomes minimum when both are at their highest points in their trajectory.

Since both have same initial velocity and same angle, the Time of flight for both shall be same.
And the time taken to reach the highest point in their trajectory is = half of time of flight
= where time of flight is given by = 2 u sin \alpha / g

therefore half of this time = u sin \alpha / g is the time after which their separation becomes minimum.
But the answer is given in terms of d ( which is range of the projectile ) so you derive the answer in terms of d.

we know that d= u2 sin 2 \alpha /g so it can be re written as 2ucos \alpha u sin \alpha /g = d

so u sin \alpha / g = d / 2ucos \alpha

but  u sin \alpha / g = time taken for distance to become minimum

therefore answer is d / 2ucos\alpha
