Hi,

Look at the concept of gravitational fields.
When you travel towards the centre, the M of earth is to be taken which is lying deeper that you. So this means that if you are standing at r/2 (r is radius of earth) than the mass of earth responsible to generate gravitational filed is proportional to r/2, i.e. it will be 1/8th of thetotal mass.

Where as if you move away from earth, whole mass of earth is take to generate the field.
