Assume that a uniform rod rests in a vertical position on a surface of negligible friction. The rod is then given a horizontal blow at its lower end. Describe the motion of the center of mass of the rod and of its upper endpoint.

When the rod is given a horizontal blow at its lower end, it will rotate about its center of mass and fall under the action of gravitational force. The motion of the center of mass (CM) of the rod and its upper endpoint (P) is shown in the figure below:

It is important to note that the horizontal force rod will bring both translational and rotational motion in the rod. Therefore the rod will rotate about its center of mass, move horizontally and fall downward because of gravitational force.
