(a) What is minimum area of a block of ice 0.305 m thick floating on water that will hold up an automobile of mass 1120 kg? (b) Does it matter where the car is placed on the block of ice? The density of ice is 917 kg/m3.

No, it does not matter where the car is placed on the block of ice.
The position of the car on the ice block will not change its total weight. The buoyant force exerted by the water on the total mass of the car and the ice block will be still equal to their total weight irrespective of the position of the car on the block.
But the stability of the car and ice block does depend on the position of the car on the ice block. The position of the car on the ice block will change the common center of gravity. If the center of buoyancy and the center of gravity does not lie on the vertical line of the car and ice block system, it will be unstable position.
