Flag Mechanics> A rocket moves horizontally with a consta...
question mark

A rocket moves horizontally with a constant velocity ‘3m/s’ at a height ‘16m’. A guided missile is fired vertically with a speed ‘v’ when the rocket passes above it. Assuming that the missile always aims at the rocket with the constant speed ‘v= 5m/s’, find the time after which the missile strikes the rocket.

For rocket in x – direcn.
x = 3*t..............(1)
For missile,
on solving we get
root(h^2 + x^2) = 5t
sq. both sides we get,
h^2 + x^2 = 25t^2
put x value from eqn. (1)
we get,
256 = 16t^2
t^2 = 16
t = 4 seconds.
