A projectile is launched with initial velocity at an angle 4>0 with the horizontal. Neglect air resistance. (a) Where in the motion is the net force on the projectile equal to zero? (b) Where in the motion is the acceleration of the projectile equal to zero? (A) Somewhere before reaching its maximum height. (B) At its highest point. (C) Somewhere after reaching its maximum height. (D) Nowhere in the trajectory.

The correct option is: (B) At its highest point.
When the object reaches the maximum height in a projectile motion, the vertical component of velocity of the object becomes zero for some time. Also in the projectile motion, the horizontal component of velocity is always assumed to remain constant because there is insignificant change in the horizontal component of velocity. This ensures that there is no force in the horizontal direction.
Therefore, at the highest point in the project, the object neither has a horizontal component of force nor it has any vertical component. Thus the net force acting on an object when it is at the highest point is zero.
From Newton’s second law one has that the acceleration of the object is defined as . a_{net} = F_{net} / m.Since the mass of the object is constant, and the net force is zero, the net acceleration of object is also zero.
Therefore (B) is the correct option.
