A massive spinning wheel can be used for a stabilizing effect on a ship. If mounted with its axis of rotation at right angles to the ship deck, what is its effect when the ship tends to roll from side to side?

The angle by which the ship tends to roll from side to side depends inversely on the angular momentum of the massive spinning wheel on the ship. Therefore, the large angular momentum of the massive wheel ensures that it becomes harder for any external torque to rotate the ships sideways thereby giving the ship a stabilizing effect.
Mathematically, the angle say (θ) by which any external torque would rotate the ship sideways is given as: 233-10_1.PNG
