Initially total momentum=0
Later total momentum=MV+mv
By law of conservation of linear momentum
MV+mv=0
Or,MV=-mv
So average force required to stop gun recoil
F=MV/0.5=2MV=-2mv
The minus sign signifies it deccelerates.
