A force that averages 984 N is applied to a 420-g steel ball moving at 13.8 m/s by a collision lasting 27.0 ms. If the force is in a direction opposite to the initial velocity of the ball, find the final speed of the ball.

We have to find out the final speed of the ball. To find out the impulse, substitute -984 N for the net force F and 27.0 ms for the time interval Δt in the equation J = F Δt, J = F Δt = (-984 N) (27.0 ms) = (-984 N) (27.0 ms) (10-3 s/1 ms) = -26.6 N. s
