the angle between velocity of boat and river is 90
then resultant velocityof boat = \sqrt{4.5^{2} + 6^{2}} = 7 km/hr = 27m/s
Hope it clears..................................

Speed of boat across river is 4.5kmph . So direction is towards north.
Speed of river is 6kmph towards east or west.
So net velocity is vector addition of both these velocity vectors
√4.5^2+6^2=√42.25=7.5kmph at 37 with horizontal

So by Pythagoras theorem
√
