If the free end of the string is given a sufficiently sharp jerk the string is likely to break between hand and stone - leaving the stone suspended. The inertia of the stone`s mass will limit the strain imposed on the string above it - the stone has to accelerate in response to the impulse (F*t) applied .. this movement will be significantly less than the movement sustained by the string below (which has insignificant inertia).
