Dear Abhijeet,

We know that earth's gravitational pull always try to pull the objects towards its centre. This pull is experienced as acceleration due to gravity. So, if we want send an object to outer space we have to give enough escape velocity to avoid the gravitational pull. And this is approximately 11km/sec. Thus rockets require high amounts of fuel to be consumed for the propulsion to reach moon. But in the return journey the rocket doesnot have to accuire that much escape velocity value because for moon itis 1/9 of the earths value. Thus it can easily escape and when it enters the earths gravitational field it will be pulled automaticvally towards it.
