always think of a situation of what will happen if friction is not present and then automatically u will know the dir of frictional force

friction is the force that opposes relative motion between two surfaces.

in the case of rolling just first look for the point of contact between the surfaces concerned.

then think of them separately. look for their velocities separately. if the velocities are same then the friction force is zero.

if not then decide the body on which you are to find friction force.

the friction force acting on the body will be in a direction so as to oppose its motion relative to the surface in contact with it.

remember that the velocity of the point(s) on the rolling body is decided by superposing rotation and translation. if you do this step correctly and find the individual velocities correctly you will have no problem in deciding the direction of friction.

remember friction opposes relative motion. so think of a situation where there is no friction and whether there is relative motion or not. if relative motion is there then friction will act.

this is all about the direction of kinetic friction.
