An airplane has a speed of 600 km h −1 with respect to air. It has to fly a distance of 800 km northward. In what direction should it fly if a steady wind is blowing at a speed of 120 km h −1 from the west? What will its speed with respect to the ground be? Draw the relevant diagram for your calculations.

Dear Kumar,

It is clear that the plane should travel northwest at an angle 'theta' to north.

600sin(theta)=120, theta=sin-1(1/5)

speed w.r.t. ground=600cos(theta)=600cos(sin-1(1/5)) kmph
