An airplane has a speed of 600 km h−1with respect to air. It has to fly a distance of 800 kmnorthward. In what direction should it fly if a steady wind is blowing at a speed of120 km h−1from the west? What will its speed with respect to the ground be? Draw therelevant diagram for your calculations.

It is clear that the plane should travel northwest at an angle 'theta' to north.

600sin(theta)=120, theta=sin^-1(1/5)

speed w.r.t. ground=600cos(theta)=600cos(sin^-1(1/5)) kmph
