HCV Work and Energy, question 35:
Slide has total length of 10 metres and height of 8 metres. A vertical ladder is provided to reach to the top. Boy weighing 200 newtons climbs up the ladder to the top of the slide and slides down to the ground. The average friction offered by the slide is three tenth of his weight. Find the work done by the ladder on the boy as he goes up.
work done=mass*acceleration*displacement=8*200=1600 J
When the boy is climbing up the ladder, force exerted by the ladder on the boy is perpendicular to his displacement (moving upwards).
Therefore,work done=F.S cos90=0
the answer given is zero..
by work energy theorem i got the answer as 1600.
if the force is perpendicular to the displacement of the boy then what force causes the boys displacement?
