See, increasing the succeeding units by a power of ten, is the standard way to define various levels of

system of units

Otherwise, if we for example, increase them by one, the nomenclature would become so complicated, and unnecessarily complex.

Hence, 100 cm = 1m, and 1000 m = 1 km is better than defining 100cm= 1m; 101cm = something, 102cm= something else.
