for river boat probs 2 concepts are most imp.  -  knowledge of relative velocity and resolution of vectors , only these 2 things are required to solve probs so first learn the concept of "relative" velocity/acc. and how to resolve vectors acc. to ques.

You can search example of river boat on internet, they are available on many sites with animation for better clarity.
