Grade 12Marks and Rank in IIT JEE

If I get 80 percentage in aggregate from CBSe board and do not fall into top 20percentile, will I get a seat in IIT after securing needed score in Jee advanced.
My friend in IIT says top 20percentile is mandatory.
Please clarify as I will get 80percentage and will not be top 20 percentile and planning to drop a year

Since you are from CBSE board you need to get minimum 75% . top 20 percentile criteria is mainly for other boards. Mainly you need to be top ranker in JEE to get seat in IIT.
