Why the tendency of backbonding is effective when the size of valence shell matches, like in Boron hallide? Please explain briefly.

Back bonding is effective when the size of valence shell matches as the lone pair of atoms keep oscillating between the metals. And in this manner it gets many options for changing its psoitions and make the molecule more stable.
