Hydrogen is electro positive while Nitrogen is electronegative...The bond however is covalent and in covalent bonding the more electronegative element is written first, that`s why we have NH3.In compound formation, you consider the valencies. Hydrogen has 1 and Nitrogen is 3, cross multiply their valencies u have NH3 instead of N3H

#Chidi Kester. Then Why H2O is not written as OH2 as oxygen is more electronegative and the bond is covalent?

Like I said earlier, you consider the valencies, hydrogen is univalent oxygen is divalent... Cross multiply their valencies.there are things u consider in compound formation 1)the type of elements involved(are they metals, nonmetals, are they electro positive or negative,) 2)the type of bonds formed3)the valencies of those elements, etc.
