Why is the difference btw the 2 nd I.E and 3 rd I.E very small in transition elements compared to the main group elements?

This is due to the fact that they donot still aquire some stable electronic configuration while loosing their second and third electron respectively and this results in very less difference in their 2nd and 3rd Ionisation enthalpies.

Second Ionisation energy :
It is the energy needed to remove a second electron from each ion in 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions to give gaseous 2+ ions.
Once we removed the first electron we are left with a positive ion. If we try to remove a negative electron from a positive ion is going to be more difficult than removing it from an atom. Removing an electron from a 2+ or 3+ (etc) ion is going to be progressively more difficult.
Hope this helps
Good Luck
