hydrogen is placed in first group because of its elctronic coniguration is ns1.that’s why it is placed in first place in modern periodic table because moder periodic table is designed depend upon the atomic number.

The atomic number of H is 1.And the orbit is ns1.According to modern periodic table H  least number means 1.So it is at the first.Actually there is no clarity for H where we have to place in 7th period or 1st period. For now it took place in 1st period.
