Halides have high negative enthalpy of formation because they achieve Nobel gas configuration on gaining an electron.

in every chemical reaction we always try to go from higher energy state to lower energy state enthalpy was always negative which means that energy was lost in that reaction the only way for a spontaneous reaction to occur with a positive enthalpy of the formation is if the entropy of the reaction is greatl positive depending on the temp  of the environmnt

On successive addition of proton in the same energy cell, nuclear pull on valence electron increases and electron- electron repulsion being negligible, atomic size decreses and it becomes easier to attain stable electronic configuration of nearest noble gas by accepting one electron and thereby releasing energy
