Potash alum is a double salt;a double salt has same anion and different cations or vice versa.Double salt is prepared by combination of 2 different salts, crystallizing them in the same ionic lattice. So in order to prepare a double salt like potash alum, the salts reacting(aluminium sulphate and potassium sulphate) should be taken in equal moles. That is nothing but taking equimolar quantities of reacting compounds. So inorder to prepare a double salt we need to take them in equimolar quantities.
