Why acidified the yellow (Na2CrO4) solution with CH3COOH?

Actually this process is a part of preparation of K2Cr2O7. When Na2CrO4 is acidified CrO4(2-) ion disproportionate into Cr2O7(2-) ion. Hence Na2CrO4 converts into Na2Cr2O7 which can be then converted into K2Cr2O7.
