When the ore haematite is burnt in air with coke around 2000oC along with lime, the process not only produces steel but also produces a silicate slag that is useful in making building materials such as cement. Discuss the same and show through balanced chemical equations.

Haematite (Fe2­O3) on burning with coke and lime at 2000oC result in the following reactions.
C + O2 → CO2
CO2+ O → 2CO
3CO + Fe2O3 → 2Fe + 3CO2 (Reduction of Fe2O3 to form steel)
(steel)
SiO2 + CaO → CaSiO3 (Slag, CaSiO3 is used as building material)
(Lime) (Slag)
