what is the oxidation state of C and N in HNC and C in Al(CNO)3 ?

HNC ---------- 
1+ x-5 = 0 
x = 4 
O.N,. of C = +4 
ON. of N = -5
 
The more electronegative element is assigned the negative oxidation number. 

CNO1- 
O = -2 
N = -3 (more electronegative than C) 
C = +4 
The sum of these oxidation numbers is -1, the same as the overall charge on the ion.

HNC
H= +1 (because less electro negative)
N= -3 (because N is more electro negative than C and H. Therefore, -2 from C and -1 from H)
C= +2 ( because C is less electro negative than N. Therefore,  +2 from N)
Since, co-ordinate bond is present between C and N 
and covalent bond between N and H
