the first thing I'm going to show you is theelectron configuration for a regular copper ion. because that's what it's based off ofcopper. sits here in their periodic table so theelectron configuration of copper is 1s2. 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d.Feb 27, 2013

Electronic configuration of Cu+ is :

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s1

But the expected one is :

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d9 4s2

This can be explained on the basis that fully filled orbitals are more stable due to symmetry and more amount of exchange energy. So one elecron jumps from 4s to 3d.
