BOD indicates the amount of putrescible organic matter present in water. Therefore, a low BOD is an indicator of good quality water, while a high BOD indicates polluted water. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is consumed by bacteria when large amounts of organic matter from sewage or other discharges are present in the water

water supply with a BOD level of 3-5 ppm is considered moderately clean. In water with a BOD level of 6-9 ppm, the water is considered somewhat polluted because there is usually organic matter present and bacteria are decomposing this waste.

BOD is biochemical oxygen demand and it measures the amount of oxygen required by bacteria to break the organic matter present per litre of water so BOD less than 5 means that the water is clean and BOD of more than 17 means that the water is highly polluted
