It was observed that dissolving lead in a liquid ammonia solution containing sodium gave a compound that contained the two metals. Extensive work on systems of this type was carried out in the 1930s by Eduard Zintl in Germany, whose work is considered to be the foundation of this type of chemistry. As is often the case when someone makes a signifi cant discovery, compounds of this type are now referred to as Zintl compounds or Zintl phases .
