A. Atom in excited stage.

Characteristic line spectra are produced when atoms are excited by X-ray photons or accelerated electrons. Upon such excitation, an inner-shell electron is ejected creating a vacancy. The vacancy is filled by electron of heigjer lying orbit. This electron transfer emits X-ray frequency of specific frequency which when taken through spectroscope gives spectral lines.
