Barium sulphate has the molecular formula of BaSO4.It is a soft crystalline solid which is odorless and insoluble in water. It occurs as the mineral barite which is the main commercial source of barium. Its density is 4.50gm/cm3 and refractive index is 1.64.It melts around 1580 degC but decomposes above 1600 degC.The crystalline sturcture of BaSO4 is known to be rhombic with a space group pnma. The lattice parameters are : a = 8.896Å ,b = 5.462Å,c = 7.171Å,V = 348.4Å.Its three-dimensional sturcture is as follows--
