numbering of groups from 1 to 18 in the IUPAC long form periodic table is done according to their atomic number and similar properties with similar valency.
And each group has been named an unique name.
group 1 = alkali metals
group 2 = alkaline metals
group 11 = coinage metals
group 15 = pictogens
group 16 = chalcogens
group 17 = halogens
group 18 = noble gases
