Because the chloride ion is more electronegative than the hydrogen ion, HCl is a polar covalent molecule. As a result, the chloride ion has a partial negative charge, whereas hydrogen has a partial positive charge. HCl has a covalent nature because the hydrogen and chlorine atoms share electrons.
