Dear student

Theelectron gain enthalpy becomes less negative as we move downagroup. Aswe move downagroup, both the atomic size and the nuclear charge increases. ... With the increase in atomic size, the attraction of the nucleus for the incomingelectrondecreases. Hence, theelectron gain enthalpy becomes less negative.

this is because,as we go down the group both atomic size and nuclear charge increases, but the effect of atomic size is more prominent than that of nuclear charge. hence the force of attraction between, the nucleus and the added electron decreases.so, enthalpy becomes less negative as we move down the group.
