the colour of the compound can be identified by finding out the ions present in the compound , the metal ion absorbs certain wavelength of light and reflects the opposite colour . 
when ligand attach to the metal to form coordination compound , electron in d orbital split into high energy and low energy orbitals . 
the diffrence in the two energy level is referred as delta , or u can called that as energy transition . 
|the complimentary colours are mix to gether to give a white light , so, the colours are opposite to each other than the colour which are absorbed .
