The concentration of hydronium ions decreases when an acid is diluted because on adding water the H+ ions of the acid and hydroxyl ions of water react to form water molecules and the concentration of hydronium ions decreases

Dear student
It can be explained in 2 ways
1)First way:
H3O+ +H2O gives H3O+(aq)
Hydronium aqueous means more number of H2O (solvent) is surrounded by the Hydronium . If you add more water (i.e dilution) then more number of H2O is surrounded,as a consequence Hydronium ion concentration decreases very much in the solution pH =_log (H+) pH value increases gradually to neutral from acidic.
2)Another way
[Solute]+[solvent]=[solution]
If you add the solvent excess, concentration of solute decreases gradually (i.e hydronium ion concentration decreases)
