Potassium dichromate is an oxygen rich compound. During the reaction it undergoes decomposition to produce oxygen gas. This oxygen gas comes out from the reaction mixture with pressure and thus makes the it porous. Reaction for the decomposition of potassium dichromate: K2Cr2O7 --> 2CrO2 + K2O + O2
